It took me a few pages of Paul D. Brazill’s Too Many Crooks (Near to the Knuckle) to settle into Brazill’s style — a Tarantino humor with Leonard’s directness. And, who names one of the main characters McGuffin? Either you’ll laugh at this joke or not. I laughed and I think you will too.This McGuffin thing is a literary easter egg, if you will, and Brazill sprinkles many others throughout Too Many Crooks. There is a family of characters name Rhatigan — I presume named after Chris Rhatigan, a crime fiction writer and editor. The novel’s title even comes from a British movie comedy of the same name “about a bunch of inept crooks who kidnap the wrong woman.” Hell, even some of the chapter titles are jokes that I got. What other jokes and references will you find?
Too Many Crooks moves quickly between London and Warsaw and back again as well as criminal to criminal. Like all good crime books, it begins with a murder.
"Ted Singh had really had enough of Bobby Jake’s incessant whining and he was more than somewhat relieved when Ziggy eventually shot the annoying f***er in the back of the head, spraying blood and gunk down the front of Jake’s previously pristine white Fred Perry t– shirt.
Ted’s guts churned. Although he certainly had no qualms about the moral aspects of murdering Bobby Jake, he didn’t really have the stomach for the gory stuff. He never had, truth be told.
“Hold onto this for me,” said Ziggy, handing the Glock to Ted whose hands shook as he took the gun."
The novel might actually have too many crooks, but don’t worry, that’s why the criminals carry firearms. The felonious herd is thinned out repeatedly and with great effect. But nasty killings are not the only things you will find in Too Many Crooks, Brazill’s writing is fast-paced and humorous which makes this one-sitting novel a lively read.

Another engaging offering from Hartlepool’s premier wordsmith.
128 pages long – or short if you like - a romp of pure comedy gold with Mr Brazill resurrecting his unhealthy obsession with Himmler’s ring-piece.
London, Warsaw, pubs and hotels, hospitals and bedrooms, Russian gangsters and an aging odd couple, Leslie and Sidney - still with the chops to go head to head with a biker gang and our dangerous foreigners, hat-tips to Pink Floyd and Bowie, Rod Stewart and Coldplay, Nazi memorabilia - Lugers and Himmler’s legendary Totenkopf ring, wheelchairs and crutches, vodka and Guinness, a mcguffin – Jim McGuffin, memory loss and murder, jelly and a whip – but not party food, coke and c^*k, and a passing reference to a short ginger bloke with sunglasses.
There aren’t many better ways of spending a couple of hour’s reading-time in the company of one of Brazill’s books…… mystery, cultural references, action, violence, enough boozing to sink a battleship, memorable characters and a genius for situational comedy……
Leslie and Stanley and the aftermath of a business meeting with the Russians…
“Speaking of which,” said Leslie. She unzipped Sidney’s fly.
“You know how murder always gets me horny. And we do have the room until tomorrow.”
“What about them?” said Sidney.
He nodded toward the corpses spread around the room.
“Let’s deal with the other stiffs after I deal with this one,” said Leslie.
“Fnarr fnarr,” said Sidney.

When I got to Carl’s gaff, Velvet answered the door in a red leather dress that was made with just about enough material to make a wallet, and looking like a long limbed drink of water calling out to a thirsty man.

Fast paced, very funny caper novella.
Paul D Brazill doesn't miss a step in this story. Dive bars, drunks, and dangerous criminals abound in a most entertaining way.
Too Many Crooks was the longest story that I’ve read from this author and man…what a story. I think that anyone who can write of Iron Maiden and Makers Mark in the same story will find a fan in me.
A recommended quick crime read.
I'll be looking into more from this writer.
… when it’s Paul D. Brazill’s book, that is. It’s another great piece of noir literature by the man himself. He literally put the McGuffin into this one along with a bunch of other characters you’d expect to meet in a Brazill’s book. There can't be too many crooks in his stories, so grab the book, become one of them and indulge yourself with a healthy dose of vivid imagery and laugh-out-loud word phrases.
