This book had some interesting subplots, throughout each twist and turn. The difference's of Jon, who had the "typical" problems about love, during his teen years, when he was interested in Vanessa and Carter, who may have had some issues BUT, was more of a "Lance Romance" kind of guy. Though his doubts and hesitations, would cost him, later in the story. This book is an excellent read. You will enjoy "The Measure of Love" for what it is, romance delivered without the "madness" and "crazed" characters many modern novels, of this genre, seem to deliver; more grit and "nastiness" to peak a readers interest. The author lets you form your own opinion, of the characters and whether you agree with the end result. You won't be able to put it down until its conclusion, because of the changing plots.Product details

The Measure of Love edition by Saundra MacKay Literature Fiction eBooks Reviews
I have to admit, I was uber excited to read this book. I love romance, and I thought that the fact that this woman, Vanessa, would be also battling another cause in her life, her size, that it would make it all the more interesting. I did enjoy the romantic aspect, but I felt as though the characters were flat. And in essence, there's nothing wrong with that because not every author prefers round, complex characters. But, in my personal opinion, I would've found it better if they had a little more personality, a little more suspense, and maybe even a little more in-depth conversations with each other. That would've brought more life to the story and made it a true page turner. That doesn't mean that this book was awful. I still enjoyed it and I did see Vanessa grow a bit as a person, which was all the worth while. I don't know if I'd recommend to anyone not interested in romance, but if not for that part, the story may seem a little bland.

The Measure of Love by Saundra MacKay is a romance novel with some not-so-usual themes running through, which I found interesting. The main character, Vanessa, is a plus-sized African American woman who, until the start of the book, hadn't found love, though her best friend Stacie had. They've been friends for years and supported one another through all of the challenges they faced in being a larger size than most of the other people in their lives, so it's not a surprise that Stacie and her boyfriend play a role in Vanessa meeting Carter, someone Vanessa felt an instant draw to. This is a great set-up for a really good romance, but somewhere after the 4th chapter, the book just petered out in the plot line. There were a couple of events that took place and they were written more as an afterthought, not anything in the way of a storyline. I feel that the book is good, but it needed more substance and description throughout to build around a really strong plot idea. I think Ms. MacKay is an author that will find a strong following if she continues to write in this genre. I received a free copy of this book in exchange for an honest review.
The concept for this book was interesting and made me eager to read it. Unfortunately, the story-line was flat and was unable to hold my interest. The writing was okay, but lacked feeling and emotions which made it difficult to connect with the characters & story. The lack of emotion could partly be blamed on the book being written in third person. However, I have read other books written in this point of view that did not lack feeling. Additionally, the dialogue felt contrived and unrealistic for the setting. This made connecting with the characters difficult as well. Finally, the story did not flow very well especially in the beginning, but it did improve as the book progressed. I feel this author has potential, but for me this book missed its mark. I received a copy of this book in exchange for an honest review. I am always impressed to see an author complete and publish their work, it is a monumental accomplishment. All of the main characters in Saundra MacKay's book are friendly, caring, and loyal. Many of the characters are so comfortable with each other, that they spend quite a bit of time in companionable silence, and the author tells us what the characters are thinking through description, not dialog. The protagonist, Vanessa, is a woman of size, and she is likable, but is not real (for example, what does she do for a living? What are her guilty pleasures? How about one character flaw?) with a little more definition, she would be utterly human, relatable, and lovable. This book was okay, but I would prefer more depth of character, more conflict in relationships, and more dialog so the characters show me who they are, instead of the author telling me who they are.
I was really looking forward to reading this story. It seemed to have so much potential going for it and the storyline seemed to hint at any number of things. However, it fell kind of flat. The characters were all a little sweet.
Vanessa had a wonderful supportive family that she just seems to disappear from for a while. She has a nice friendship with Stacie. In fact, they both decide to move far away from Vanessa's very supportive family. Stacie seems nice but there was really nothing exciting about her story either. Carter seems to show the only mystery or have a little something else happening, but that seemed to fizzle out, too. Vanessa gets her happy ever after, but I feel that there was never any growth that happened with the characters. We learn about what Jon was really thinking that night long ago, and then everything seems to be wonderful again. There was really no true conflict, except a few doubts that Vanessa occasionally feels with being a "woman of size". Bring me a few flaws and make these characters more relatable, and I would have cared a little more.

I just finished this delightful book and I can say I clearly hear a strong voice coming through. And it is not a typical voice. I look forward to reading more from this author and watching the development of this fresh voice. Congratulations on a wonderful first novel! You inspire me.
